What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)? The Mayo Clinic defines post traumatic stress disorder as “a mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.”
Most often we hear about veterans who come back from war and experience PTSD. Veterans are not the only individuals who can suffer from PTSD. Children and adults of all ages and ethnic backgrounds can experience PTSD.
A “terrifying event” could be a car wreck, a natural disaster, an accident, an assault, physical or emotional abuse, the list could go on and on.
